I have to say, MARVEL’S DOCTOR STRANGE was probably the most visually stunning Marvel movies I’ve ever seen. It was like INCEPTION and HARRY POTTER had a baby and it grow up to be the coolest kid ever!
Benedict Cumberbatch plays Dr. Stephen Strange, an outstanding neurosurgeon who, due a tragic car accident, loses the use of his hands. Dr. Strange learns about a possible way to get the use of his hands back, so he can return his beloved profession. Strange’s quest to repair his hands takes him beyond his wildest comprehension when he meets The Ancient One (Tilda Swinton). Thanks to Dr. Strange’s photographic memory, he catapults from student to being center stage for all the action.
I’m interested to see how Marvel will top this movie, visually speaking. I’m not sure it’s possible. All of the actors in the movie separately are phenomenal, but I feel like in this movie they spent 99 percent of the time making sure the visual effects of the movie were incredible, and they missed out on the substance of the story. I think Director Scott Derrickson was so worried about being politically correct about casting, in some cases the right actors weren’t chosen, such as the character of The Ancient One.
All and all, I will be buying the movie when it comes out on Blu-ray. I will probably see it in the theater again, because the visual effects were just that stunning.
Some advice: wait for the lights in the theater to come up before you leave. Like most Marvel movies, there are two tie-ins to upcoming movies. The first is shortly after the credits start to roll, the second is at the end, right before the house lights come up. Last but not least, it wouldn’t be a Marvel movie without a cameo from The King of Superheros, Stan Lee. One of my favorite things about Marvel movies is trying to find him; it’s almost like Where’s Waldo for Marvel.
I give Dr. Strange 4.5 stars out of a possible 5 stars. Yes, it’s only because of the visual effects, but at least I can admit it. ☺
